Who conducted the study and at which university

The main research team is from Zunyi Medical University (China). Specialists from the Department of Immunology, the Special Key Laboratory of Gene Detection & Therapy of Guizhou Province, the Department of Histology and Embryology, and other university departments participated in the study. The Third Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University also participated. The corresponding author is Jidong Zhang.

A total of 11 authors are listed: Dongfeng Lan, Dan Zhang, Xiaofang Dai, Ji Cai, He Zhou, Tao Song, Xianyao Wang, Qinghong Kong, Zhengzhen Tang, Jun Tan, and Jidong Zhang.

What Was Studied

The authors analyzed the accumulated scientific data on how mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and the exosomes they secrete may influence the biological mechanisms of aging.

In particular, they examined genomic instability, telomere shortening, epigenetic changes, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, depletion of the stem cell pool, chronic inflammation, and disruptions in intercellular communication.

It is particularly interesting that the authors highlight paracrine signaling as one of the most important proposed mechanisms of MSC action. MSC exosomes carry biologically active components, including proteins, mRNA, and microRNA, which can influence other cells. The article also discusses immunomodulatory mechanisms involving TGF-β and IL-10.
